Mathematics at RKPS

At Rudyard Kipling Primary School & Nursery, our Mathematics lessons foster independence and empower children to become confident problem solvers. Following White Rose Hub Mathematics means that maths resources are designed to instill a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a full range of fun, inspiring classroom activities. These meticulously designed lessons, and through using high quality learning materials, ensure that every child can engage with the curriculum and reach their maximum potential. Our approach encourages students to apply their mathematical knowledge to provide reasoned explanations for their solutions. For those who grasp new concepts swiftly, we motivate them to delve deeper through challenging extensions to help deepen their understanding.

Mastering Number

In EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 we teach Mastering Number. These short maths sessions employ the use of specialised mathematical apparatus (rekenreks) and active, short lessons of approximately 15 minutes.

The outcomes for the children:

·         To develop fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with number;

·         To be able to clearly communicate their mathematical thinking;

·         To make good progress towards their Early Learning Goals and Year Group Expectations;

·         To foster a positive attitude towards maths and a willingness to ‘have a go’.

Times Tables Rock Stars and NumBots

Welcome Rudyard Rockstars! Times Tables Rock Stars and NumBots is back with a bang this year and the Rudyard Rockstars team are committed to helping children learn their number facts and times tables; we hope you can get behind us too in a fun and exciting way!

Each child has a personal login which they can use in school and at home on a range of different devices for free. Just download the app, log in and enter the rock and roll world to get started.

Once set up, children enjoy the sense of achievement that comes from answering questions and earning coins, which they use to upgrade their rock avatar. Many children thrive on the competitive element, so choose to play in a multiplayer game against their classmates or even students around the world, whilst others focus on improving their rock speed and climbing the rockstar ranks, with the ultimate goal of achieving the status "Rock Hero".

Supporting pupils with additional needs

Our teaching and learning is tailored and scaffolded to meet individual needs, with some learners requiring a more personalised approach, including specific learning outcomes and provision to develop foundational skills. We provide our children with resources, visuals and representations to help them meet their learning objectives.
